You are correct! The flat nose is aerodynamically impractical. It's not as terrible as I expected, though. Perhaps that has to do with the small size of this design (only 17 cm long). As a bonus, the flat nose holds up well to impacts!

Thanks for the question. The non-corrugated cardboard (aka chipboard) is for the interior reinforcement and some bits on the exterior, such as the windscreen frame. The wings are made from an old file folder. I usually use pasta boxes, six-pack boxes, backs of notepads, or 12"x12" chipboard sheets from a craft store. Cereal boxes are sometimes too thin.

But parasol wings don't fly well, in my experience (too much of a pendulum effect, I think). If I make a YouTube video to accompany this Instructable, I will include a version with a high wing. Less nose weight means it won't track forward as much, if at all. I'm kind of surprised it flies at all without the paper clip. Thanks for sharing about the paper.

Very adorable! This would be a fun class project for developing motor skills, stimulating creativity, and encouraging reading.

I also have wondered if a quetzalcoatlus or pterosaur of similar shape was able to fly, and for the same reasons you mention. The brain and beak have to account for a lot of weight. If you look at a flamingo in flight, they stick their long legs straight back for counterbalance. Anyways, I'll leave it to the paleo scientists to figure it out. I think the forward sweep is the best explanation I've heard. And if I ever get ant aft-wing glider to fly reliably without a canard, I'll be sure to post.

Thanks! Yes, I think it is rigid enough, but it's not very good at transitioning from a launch to a glide, so you might get some spectacular nose dives and few graceful descents. : )
